My Opinion Ever wonder why something is labeled Special? Well, because it's different and separate from the usual and that's what makes something Special more desirable. What a concept! In the early 1970's Volkswagen was struggling with ever floundering sales numbers due to the increase of Japanese, European and US auto manufacturers taking a huge bite out of the small car market. VW needed to come up with a plan unique to the company, a plan to bring the VW Beetle back into the new car buyer perspective. Along came the Special Editions. These cars, given some pretty hyped up names like the "Sports Bug", "Sun Bug" and the "La Grande" soon arrived on the American scene. Keep in mind here the Special Edition Beetles have only cosmetic differences from their "normal stock" siblings aside from a wider wheel/tire (Sports Bug only) no factory mechanical upgrades or high performance items were used. In other words these Special Editions are stock factory vehicles made prettier and more desirable. Today's enthusiast will add high performance items to give it some go and increase the thrill factor of course, no harm done. We've seen old school, we've seen buggies, rats, the Cal. look and German Look, let's take a look back to the 70's "Special Edition" factory look. The Special Edition Beetle in my opinion is becoming the next retro-fad and worth looking into. Half the fun is finding the right car to restore and hunting for correct parts!
